Weather and Resources on the Tundra
- Terrible cold and howling wind
- Average percipitation of about 10 inches per year (mainly snow)
- Average temperature of the hottest month is 30 degrees Fahrenheit
-Icy soil and rocky terrain, does not make for great plant growing conditions
- Wood is not a resource in this biome
-Barely any sunlight reaches through the dense clouds to touch the surface of the tundra
- Very little daylight, so solar power is not an option
- Has a few nonrenewable fossil fuels like coal and oil/petroleum
- Coal mines are plentiful here
- Strong winds are constantly blowing across the arctic tundra
- Some winds reach speeds of 100mph
- There is plenty of open space for the wind to blow across the frigid land
- These conditions are perfect for building wind turbines
Wind Turbines
- Wind turbines are giant propellers raised hundreds of feet in the air
- They harness the power of the wind to create electricity
- Extremely Eco-friendly
- Don’t have any harmful byproducts
- One large wind turbine could power 350 medium sized homes
- A lot of power will be generated from these turbines
- Wind turbines are also the cheapest renewable energy source
- They do not take up a lot of land and make very little noise
